Hiking with your dog: Rügen’s most beautiful routes
Do you want to get out into nature, enjoy sweeping views and have your dog by your side? On Rügen, you’ll find walking trails with plenty of space to explore, fresh air and plenty of variety for both humans and dogs.
– Circular walk at Cape Arkona (start: Putgarten car park): A roughly six-kilometre route along the cliffs, past the radio beacon tower and always with views of the Baltic Sea – a walk suitable for any time of year. If you like, you can take a detour to the fishing village of Vitt.
– Walk around Lake Nonnensee (near Bergen): A relaxing walk around the lake on easily accessible paths – no hills, but plenty of nature. The roughly six-kilometre route is ideal for unwinding and taking in the surroundings.
– High-bank trail between Sellin and Baabe: From the pier, the path leads you through the beech-covered high banks – with views of the sea and plenty of space for your dog to explore. At Friedensberg, a quiet spot awaits for a break along the way. The return journey takes you across the beach; depending on the season, there’s even space for your four-legged friend to run around.
– Path of Leisure and Insight (near Putbus): Amidst ancient oaks, quiet paths and little natural highlights, it’s a wonderful place to take a deep breath. The path leads through the Goor nature reserve, past the impressive umbrella oak and the historic Goor bathhouse. Ideal for a peaceful walk with your dog.
Please remember: dogs must be kept on a lead in all the areas mentioned. In return, you can look forward to plenty of fresh air, unspoilt nature and some real favourite spots for active holidays with your dog.
Everything under control: What you need to bear in mind when visiting Rügen with your dog
A successful holiday starts with good preparation – and that goes for holidays with your dog too. To make sure everything goes smoothly on Rügen, there are a few things you should know:
– Use dog-friendly beaches: During the peak season (May to September), dogs are only allowed in the water at designated dog-friendly beaches. Outside the peak season, dogs are allowed on all beaches – provided you show consideration for other beachgoers.
– Observe the leash requirement: Leashes are compulsory in most parks, woods, towns, on public transport, at events and in nature reserves. This protects wildlife and ensures everyone gets along.
– Avoid blue-green algae: In summer, blue-green algae can appear in the water – this is dangerous for dogs. If the water looks milky-green or streaks are visible: do not let your dog swim and also prevent them from licking their coat.
– Always carry fresh water: To ensure your dog does not drink from puddles or the Baltic Sea whilst out and about, it is worth packing a bottle of tap water and a bowl.
– Don’t forget hygiene: Dog waste bags should be in every bag – but there are also plenty of free stations on Rügen. Please use them and dispose of the bags in the designated bins.
– Keep your vaccination certificate and insurance number to hand: In an emergency, it’s best to have all important documents with you.

Good to know: Our rules for your holiday with your dog on Rügen
We love dogs – and that’s exactly why we believe in clear agreements. Because when everyone knows what’s expected, the holiday is enjoyable for both humans and dogs alike.
Are there any restrictions regarding certain breeds or sizes?
Dogs that have been officially classified as dangerous or have previously been involved in biting incidents or displayed uncontrollable aggression are not permitted (proof or details to be provided by the owner).
Is dog liability insurance compulsory?
Yes, we strongly recommend that you have valid dog liability insurance. It protects both you and other guests and is particularly important in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Please ensure that your dog is properly insured before you arrive.
Can you bring just one dog, or can you bring several?
You are also welcome to bring several dogs. We charge a fee of €15 per dog per night. Please let us know how many dogs you will be bringing when you book, so that we can make the best possible arrangements for your stay.
Is there a leash requirement on the premises, or are there any hygiene rules?
Yes, dogs must be kept on a lead throughout the grounds and inside the building. This ensures that all guests – whether they have a dog or not – feel comfortable. We also ask you to keep the area clean and, of course, to clear up after your dog.
